Bring the right leaders together early. Design, Construction, Facilities, Operations, Engineering, Procurement, and the business all define success differently. The best projects bring those perspectives together before decisions are finalized.
Design for the teams who will maintain it. Equipment access, service clearances, shutoff locations, roof access, material selections, and replacement planning may not affect opening day, but they affect every day after.
Turnover is more than keys and handbooks. Commissioning, training, warranty ownership, asset data, as-builts, and clear documentation all determine how successful the transition into operations will be.
Communication is the common denominator. Every organization represented has a different project delivery process. The consistent theme was not process. It was collaboration.
One idea continued to surface throughout the conversation. Construction delivers the building. Operations depends on Facilities long after turnover to keep that building healthy, operational, and supporting the people inside it.
That’s why early collaboration is a requirement, not a recommendation.
